In today's episode I am joined by Dr. Shawn Hondorp as we discuss all things motivation, just in time for the new year!

Topics Discussed Include:
- Shawn's journey to IFS and her specialities of disordered eating and motivation
- The types of therapy modalities that were NOT working and how IFS has been beneficial for her clients and herself
- What is Self Determination Theory as it relates to motivation
- What is motivation
- Two main categories of motivation and how it impacts us
- Why shaming and critical energy doesn't lead to lasting change
- IFS as a 'how' to help people make shifts in motivation

Shawn Hondorp, PhD, ABPP is a board-certified Clinical Health Psychologist and health behavior expert.  She has a top-rated podcast called Motivation Made Easy: Body Respect, True Health where she outlines effective approaches to heal from disordered eating and improve health and well-being by looking at how research and real world experience collide via conversation and personal stories.

She founded The Psychology of Wellness because she believes that freeing people up from the drain of disordered eating means more mental and emotional bandwidth available to create a more equitable and kind world. To achieve this goal, she creates supportive learning environments for professionals doing this courageous work so that they can use their unique gifts to make a bigger impact, without the burnout. She lives in Grand Rapids, MI, with her husband and two kids and pug named Teddy. Her dream vacation day is hiking along a lake surrounded by mountains holding a warm cup of coffee, followed by a delicious dinner and a soak in a hot tub with an ice cold hazy IPA.

This December, I want to feature some of my favorite interviews from this year.  The final fourth episode I'm re-releasing is my conversation with IFS inventor Dr. Richard (Dick) Schwartz!
It was such an honor and a privilege to be able to sit with Dick and interview him about IFS for this episode.  Dr. Richard Schwartz, or Dick as he likes to be called, invented internal family systems therapy over 40 years ago.
In this episode he dives into the history of IFS and how it came to be and the challenges he faced when brining it into the world of psychology.  He discusses what is IFS, parts, and Self.  He also discusses even further in this episode about the Self.  Dick answers questions such as, what is Self? Are we born with Self energy? How is our system impacted by trauma in childhood? Does Self energy grow as we get older? What happens to Self during a traumatic event? Can we see Self?  and, what are Self-like parts?  Dick also shares what he does on a daily basis to connect with his parts in order to make IFS a life practice.  Enjoy!

This December, I want to feature some of my favorite interviews from this year.  The third episode I'm re-releasing is my conversation with IFS lead trainer Ann Sinko discussing legacy burdens.

This episode was a real treat to be able to sit with my IFS Level 1 lead trainer and talk with her about her speciality of legacy burdens.  In the episode Ann shares her history and relationship with IFS, how IFS is a constraint release model, what are legacy burdens, epigenetics, how to identify legacy burdens, adaption and LB's, covert vs. overt ways to get legacy burdens, the 9 rules of shame (used to be 8), and the steps to help address and release legacy burdens.

Ann is a senior trainer for the IFS institute and is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She was an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program for 27 years.  Ann conducts continuing education workshops on legacy burdens and grief retreats in her private practice in Portland, Connecticut.

This December, I want to feature some of my favorite interviews from this year.  The second episode I'm re-releasing is my conversation with Robert (Bob) Falconer about his book, "The Others Within Us: Internal Family Systems, Porous Mind, and Spirit Possession".

Bob is an IFS practitioner, teacher, and writer.  For the major part of his career he worked with trauma survivors, now focusing on the study and treatment of the others within us, also known as unattached burdens, or UB's for short. We discuss his ten years of work that went into his new book, the history of unattached burdens within his career, case studies that impacted his understanding about UB's, the controversy surrounding UB's, and the seven steps on how to address UB's within someone's system.

This episode was a big deal for me to be able to sit with Bob and have this discussion, and I am honored that Bob will be joining me again on the podcast in 2024 to discuss spirit guides and past lives. Stay tuned!

Enjoy!
